Another few States traveled...
Hello everyone!
Since our last post, we have stayed in Wisconsin...the fabulous cheese state and the land of delicious ice cream, Iowa..., and Kansas...beautiful but very aggressive flies!
Our first stop in Wisconsin was at a lovely county park in the middle of nowhere. We had to wait out a pretty powerful storm one evening, but we were safe and sound in our home on wheels. Before the skies turned dark, we took a walk along the jetties poking out into Green Bay which leads into the wonderful Lake Michigan. It truly was a beautiful sight to see. Once the sun came up the next morning it was time to hit the road. Our next stop, La Crosse, Wisconsin was just a short drive west to the Pettibone RV Resort. It wasn't much of a resort, but it was gorgeous none the less. It is situated on a small island surrounded by the mighty Mississippi. I had a beautiful backdrop of the majestic flowing river as I sat at the new table my husband built, tackling schoolwork. We decided to take a walk (1/2 mile up the road and over La Crosse Bridge which actually turned out to be a 2-mile walk roundtrip) to a local iconic spot for some dessert. Pearls is an old fashioned sweets, candy, chocolatier, and ice cream shop. The delicious smell of freshly made waffle cones greets you as you walk through the door, and the freshly made ice cream to put in it...was to die for! After eating every last bite of that delicious goodness, we definitely were not complaining about the walk back! The second night we were there, we were joined by a nice local couple who had us up way past our bedtime, telling stories, and laughing around the fire pit.
It was then on to Iowa, just outside of Des Moines. We stayed at a very unassuming campground built many years ago by the Army Corps of Engineers. Once again we had a beautiful lake outside our front door, Saylorville Lake. We learned the lake is actually fed by the Des Moines River as we watched the waters rush through the dam. The fishermen were in abundance on the sides of the lake, though we did not see anyone actually catch anything😕. There was not much else to see nearby, so we just relaxed around our site for a couple days. After a lovely two night stay, it was time to move on again...and make our way west towards the "yellow brick road".
Kansas...a state with tons of crops, corn, and lots of cows on mostly flat land is absolutely beautiful, but the flies are nuts! Our first of 3 stops in the Sunflower or Wheat State was just outside of Topeka. The State Park and Campground were (yup! you guessed it) surrounded by a huge body of water, Lake Shawnee. Although it was truly lovely, we arrived and were immediately swarmed by flies. It was so bad, we ran to a nearby hardware store (and by nearby, I mean about 20 minutes away) to buy whatever we could to get those pesky buggers. We ended up spending way too much money, but what choice did we have? We were at war!! I am happy to report that our efforts were not wasted and were able to enjoy the rest of our time there without constantly swatting our hands around. To further reward our efforts, we headed to Adventureland's AdventureBay water park. We spent part of an afternoon there, enjoying the warm weather and at the conveniently located Casino across the street. Kansas' second stop was again in the middle of nowhere at Wilson State Park in Sylvan Grove. It was only an overnight stay which we quickly regretted after arriving 😔. One of the most beautiful picturesque places we've been to with lush trees and...another breathtaking view of the waters of Wilson lake. The sunset and the brief sunrise was absolutely one of the best and has made it to the top of our 'best of' list. We are currently finishing up our final stopover, at a KOA in Goodland Kansas. A no-frills campground but serving our purposes of breaking up the next leg of our trip. While here, we were able to catch up on laundry, our blog post, some schoolwork, and a delicious BBQ shrimp taco dinner.
Later today, we will be arriving in Denver Colorado, for a well deserved 3-week stay! Debbie, Jeff, and little Prince Jonah are anxiously and excitedly awaiting our arrival, probably almost as much as we are! We are looking forward to spending time with our Colorado family while in one of our favorite State Parks of all time.
Until next time...we love and miss you all!!
